The Mego ‘Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Star Trek’ TV Commercial Crossover

Posted on

We’re ape-barrassed to admit it, but we weren’t familiar with the 1975 British television commercial that serves as something of a crossover between the Planet of the Apes and Star Trek franchises in terms of Mego figures. Now an “enterprising” fan named Craig Crane has lovingly restored one of those advertisements.

Turning to Memory Alpha, the wiki devoted to Star Trek, we get this bit of info: “Palitoy was a British toy and game company that attained its greatest success during the 1970s and 1980s while producing licensed toys and games based on many popular franchises, such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who and Planet of the Apes … The company’s resources were acquired by Hasbro following the company’s closure in 1984.”

The commercial below actually features POTA and Trek as separate entities until the very end, when we get an image of the figures from one franchise to the left of the screen and the other on the right.
